Peisithanatos (meaning "The Death-Persuader") was the nickname given to Hegesias of Cyrene, an ancient Greek philosopher. He is most known for his extremely pessimistic worldview, which culminated in his most prominent work entitled Death by Starvation. In this, the main character starves himself, arguing to a friend that death is more desirable than life. It describes how human misery can be so overpowering, that it can drive people to kill themselves.
