Tracks 1-8 form The Release
Tracks 9-14 are from the '88 <i ?Shrine EP
The cover art is from surrealist German artist Max Ernst (1891-1976)
"The Release" concept is influenced by Ray Garton and Thomas Tessier novels, particularly tracks 1 and 2. The theme is based on a werewolf / Mr. Hyde duality theme (as quoted in the liner notes; though it does not make sense as Dr. Jekyll is the good guy, not Mr. Hyde), and images from an old Jekyll/Hyde movie were used for the "Second Image" (track #3) video.
Tracks #4, #6 and #12 are based on Edgar Allen Poe, Clive Barker and H.P. Lovecraft stories respectively. Track #10 is a tribute to film director George Romero.
Track #2 contains a sample from the movie "Heathers" (1988; IMDB tt0097493) and a sample from "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" (1986, IMDB tt0092076).
Tracks 1, 2, 5 & 6 were previously released (not necessarily in the same version) on the Release demo in addition to track 11.
